Haunted Places in America

Hey guys, sorry about the late update! It was midterms week for me, and I have been studying and testing ALL week. I did however, decide to write about something a little more creepy for you. These are two very haunted places in America and their stories.

The Stanley Hotel…

Freelan O. Stanley opened this hotel in 1901. However, as most scary stories begin on one stormy night, June 25, 1911, the power went out. Luckily, or should I say unluckily, Freelan had gas lamps for his backup system. There was a gas leak in room 217 and when the maid, Ms.Wilson, walked into the room with a lit candle to turn on the light there was a huge explosion. It took out almost the entire west wing of the hotel. Ms. Wilson ended up falling through the floor and broke many of the bones in her body. Surprisingly, she survived and continued working at the Stanley Hotel for many more years. There is a theory that her corset actually saved her life. She worked there from 1913 to 1950. Many people report ghost sightings at the Stanley Hotel that is still opened to this day. Two of the most popular ghost sightings are Ms. Wilson and Lucy.

Ms. Wilson is reportedly staying in room 217. She’s a nice spirit as she opens and closes doors, tidies up, and unpacks bags. It is said that if you are an unmarried couple and stay in room 217, Ms. Wilson will try and “save your reputation as a woman.” Couples have reported that there was someone in between them in bed keeping them from getting to each other.

Now, Lucy has a bit of a backstory. She is a 13 year old girl who ran away from her family and secretly stayed in the basement of the Stanley, however, when a maintenance worker found her she was forced to leave. That night was an especially cold night and she ended up freezing to death right outside the hotel. Lucy is known to open and close doors so she is also a good spirit.

Many people say they see the ghost of Freelan O. Stanley in the bar. Some say they have spoken to him not knowing he was even a ghost. Flora Stanley, who was the wife of Freelan, is usually seen playing the piano in the concert hall. There is a hallway in the hotel that is haunted by children. People hear the children running, playing, and laughing.

Last but certainly not least, The Earl of Dunraven. This is honestly the creepiest one to me. He was the previous owner of the land that the Stanley Hotel was built on. He is supposedly haunting room 407, and there are reports of him standing in the corner of the room watching them. People also say that they can smell the smoke from his tobacco pipe.

Crazy facts:

-Author, Stephen King stayed at the Stanley and was inspired to write ‘The Shining’ that is now played on loop on one of the TV channels at the hotel.

-Dumb and Dumber was filmed in the Stanley Hotel, and Jim Carrey stayed in room 217. Apparently he had woken up in the middle of the night, ran out of the room, and all the way out of the hotel front doors. He ended up staying at another hotel for the remainder of the time and never told anyone what happened that night.

The Bell Witch Cave…

From what I have researched, I have decided that the Bell Witch is the ghost of a woman named Kate Batts. On Kate’s deathbed she swore she would haunt her neighbor John Bell and his family because she believed she was cheated by him in a land purchase. 1817 is the year when John Bell started noticing strange things happening and hearing odd noises in his home. The family kept this a secret for over a year even though they were terrified. However, they finally invited their neighbors over to stay for a couple of nights so they could see it for themselves. They decided to tell more people and the investigation began. Soon, this ghost got strong enough to speak. It claimed to be “Kate” the “Bells Witch.” The Bell Witch wanted two things: To kill John Bell and to keep John’s daughter, Betsy, from marrying Joshua Gardner. Joshua Gardner was a boy in her neighborhood. For three years this continued and Kate was getting increasingly dangerous and aggressive. She seemed to target John and Betsy. Betsy suffered from getting her hair pulled, getting pinched, scratched, stuck with pins, and beaten. John had to live with spells being put on him constantly. The spells would make his throat swell, facial muscles twitch and jerk, and Kate would constantly threaten him. On December 20, 1820, John Bell died, and it is said that it was from Kate poisoning him. She admitted that she was the reason he died. Then in March of 1821, Betsy decided to break off her engagement with Joshua Gardner. So in the end Kate, The Bell Witch, finally got what she wanted. This was more of a scary story, but you can still go on tours of the cave and the Bells cabin where all of this took place.

I had a few more haunted places that I wanted to talk about. However there was so much to write on these 2 specific places, that it ran pretty long. I may make a part 2 if you are interested. Comment down below and tell me if you would ever visit these places, and don’t forget to subscribe. Until next time, XO.
